Home Farm, Norfolk

Set on the coastal marshlands of North Norfolk, Home Farm is where our founder, Amanda Oldfield, tends her small flock by hand. It’s here, among wide skies, salt-tinged breezes, and organically managed pastures, that our journey into traceable, farm-sourced wool truly began.

Driven by a lifelong love of sheep and a desire to reconnect with land and craft, Amanda became a shepherd not for scale, but for meaning. What started as a personal calling has shaped our entire ethos: one of slow, sustainable sourcing and complete transparency.

From Shepherdess to Sleepmaker

Amanda’s story is far from typical in the world of mattress making. Before founding our company, Amanda followed a different kind of calling: one rooted in heritage, hands-on craftsmanship, and a love for British wool. Her decision to become a shepherd wasn’t part of a business plan—it was something deeper.

As she shared in her personal blog, Amanda began keeping sheep not for profit, but for peace. It was about stepping into the rhythm of the seasons, understanding the land beneath her boots, and learning the true value of patience and purpose. That experience of living close to nature shaped the philosophy behind our brand: that wool is not a commodity—it’s a connection.

Meet the Flock: Small Herd, Big Personality

Amanda’s flock is a joyful mix of rare and traditional sheep breeds, each selected not just for their appearance or hardiness, but for the unique qualities of their fleece. Every breed brings something special to our wool—whether it’s loft, softness, resilience, or breathability.

Southdown – Known as one of Britain’s oldest and most cherished sheep breeds, Southdowns are compact, gentle, and produce beautifully fine, springy wool. The fleece is dense but soft, offering a cushioned feel that’s perfect for adding comfort to our wool mattresses. It helps retain warmth while still allowing air to circulate—ideal for year-round comfort.

Ryeland – Ryelands are robust sheep with a calm temperament and a fleece that’s slightly coarser than Southdown but rich in character. Their wool is known for its lofty texture and creamy colour. It provides excellent support and structure in a wool comfort mattress, helping maintain firmness without sacrificing breathability.

Herdwick x Valais Blacknose – Perhaps the most charming of all is Amanda’s playful crossbreed flock of Herdwick x Valais Blacknose sheep. Combining the rugged resilience of the Lake District’s native Herdwick with the exceptionally soft fleece of the Valais, this mix produces a fleece that’s both tough and touchable. It brings bounce, breathability, and character, both to the flock and to the mattresses made from their wool.

Each sheep at Home Farm is shorn with care and respect, and Amanda is hands-on throughout the process—from pasture to product. The wool is processed gently, preserving its natural properties, and never blended with wool from other farms. This means you can trace every fibre in your mattress directly back to this flock, this farm, and this shepherd.

A Farm Built on Slow, Sustainable Values

Home Farm operates with the same principles we carry through every part of our business: care, clarity, and complete traceability. The pastures are organically managed, meaning no artificial fertilisers or pesticides. The land is nurtured in a way that promotes biodiversity, protects the soil, and ensures the health and wellbeing of the sheep that graze upon it.

This patch of coastal marshland may be small in size, but its impact is significant. Every fleece from Home Farm is used exclusively in a small run of made-to-order wool mattresses. We don’t blend wool, stockpile it, or process it in bulk. When we use Home Farm wool, we use only Home Farm wool. It’s part of our one-farm-at-a-time promise—a model that ensures complete transparency, true traceability, and a meaningful story behind every mattress we make.

Why It Matters: More Than Just Wool

In a market where “traceable wool” is often just a marketing phrase, we believe in showing the full story. Many mass-market brands source their wool from central suppliers, where fleeces from multiple farms are blended, bulk-processed, and shipped off for production. By the time the product is complete, any connection to the original farm is long gone.

Not here. Not ever.

We make our mattresses using wool from one farm at a time, starting with Home Farm. That means when you purchase a mattress made from Home Farm wool, you know exactly where it came from. You know the sheep, the landscape, and even the shepherd. This model isn’t just about transparency—it’s about trust. And it’s what makes our wool and latex mattresses, organic sleep surfaces, and eco-friendly bedding truly unique.

From Marshland to Mattress

Home Farm’s setting on the North Norfolk coast is more than picturesque—it’s part of what makes the wool so special. The coastal air, salt-licked grasses, and marshland pastures create a unique terroir that influences the health of the sheep and the quality of their fleece.

The result? Wool with character. Fibre that breathes, insulates, and lasts. Materials that connect you not only to comfort, but to nature. Every mattress made with Home Farm wool is a quiet celebration of British farming, traditional craft, and sustainable living. It’s a reminder that good things take time—and that your bed can be more than a product. It can be a story, a place, and a promise kept.
