Edward
The Edward iron bed is a refined interpretation of classic dormitory design. Formerly known as Oliver, this much-loved iron bed frame remains a favourite for its strength, balance, and understated presence. Every Edward bed frame is handcrafted from solid British iron in our own workshop, ensuring lasting quality you can feel from the first night.
Unlike mass-produced metal bed frames, our iron beds are built using traditional techniques and solid iron bar. As a result, the Edward offers superior rigidity, weight, and long-term durability. While many metal beds are made from lightweight tubing and imported components, this iron bed is made to order and finished by hand. That difference matters over time.
The design itself is clean and purposeful. Minimal detailing keeps the focus on proportion and structure, while the low footboard helps the bed feel open and uncluttered. Consequently, the Edward works beautifully in both compact rooms and larger spaces.
Colour choice allows the design to shift in character. A black metal bed frame finish feels bold and architectural, creating a strong visual anchor. In contrast, ivory appears softer and more delicate, lending the bed a lighter, calmer presence.
Each Edward iron bed includes an FSC-certified pine slatted base as standard. This provides excellent airflow and perfectly supports one of our natural wool bedstead mattresses for long-term comfort.

Edward’s Story
The Edward iron bed has a personal history that genuinely matters to us. For many years, this design was known as Oliver. The name was never chosen for effect. Instead, it reflected the honest and uncomplicated character of the iron bed itself.
Over time, Oliver evolved naturally. It was shaped by everyday use, customer feedback, and careful refinement. Its dorm-style proportions, low footboard, and reassuring strength quickly stood out. As a result, it became a bed we returned to again and again in our workshop. Not because it followed trends, but because it worked beautifully.
Eventually, however, the design began to be copied. Another British bedmaker introduced a visually similar metal bed frame using the same name. While imitation can happen in any craft, we felt it was important to protect the integrity of our work. Therefore, we made the decision to rename the bed. Edward felt like the right successor. Strong, familiar, and quietly timeless.
Although the name changed, the bed itself did not. Just like our full range of iron beds, the Edward iron bed is still handcrafted from solid British iron in our own workshop. Unlike mass-produced metal bed frames, every iron bed frame is made to order and finished by skilled hands. Consequently, this bed frame offers exceptional strength, balance, and longevity.
The design remains rooted in traditional Victorian dormitory beds. These beds were built for everyday use and designed to endure. Edward follows the same philosophy, where function leads form and simplicity becomes timeless.
Edward is supplied with an FSC-certified pine slatted base as standard. This base pairs perfectly with our British wool bedstead mattresses, which are non-turn and specifically designed for slatted bases. Because of this, the mattress sits correctly, breathes naturally, and delivers consistent support night after night.
Renaming the bed was never about change. Instead, it was about staying true to what matters most. Edward carries the same spirit Oliver bed frame always did. Honest design, made properly, and built for life.
