Not Every Metal Bed Is Made the Same: 5 Things to Look for Before Choosing a Bed
A beautiful bed often catches your eye before anything else. Perhaps it is the curve of the headboard. Maybe it is the warmth of polished brass. Or perhaps it simply looks right for the room. But appearance only tells part of the story.
Look beneath the finish and two similar-looking metal beds can be very different. One might use substantial iron and solid components. Another may rely on lighter, hollow construction. The difference is difficult to see in a photograph.
That makes knowing what to look for particularly useful.
What is the bed frame actually made from?
It sounds like an obvious place to start. However, the term metal bed covers a surprisingly wide range of products. Two frames can share a traditional silhouette yet have very different construction beneath the finish. A bed can also look substantial without necessarily being substantial. That makes the materials underneath particularly important.
Look beyond descriptions such as iron bed, metal bed or brass bed. Find out what actually forms the frame.
- Are the main bars solid or hollow?
- What forms the feet and joints?
- Is the metal substantial, or has the manufacturer designed the frame around lightweight construction?
These questions tell you much more than the colour or finish alone.
At Iron & Brass, all our iron, brass and nickel beds begin with a substantial iron core. We use solid iron and brass bars rather than lightweight hollow construction. Solid materials also form our feet and joints. That gives our beds a physical substance you can feel. These details rarely attract your attention first when browsing photographs of beautiful bedrooms. Yet they become much more important when you consider how long you want to live with your bed.
This is also why we avoid treating every metal bed as though it were the same product. The phrase describes a category. It tells you surprisingly little about the construction within it. When comparing iron bed frames, start with a simple question. What am I actually buying?
Is the brass actually brass?
Where was your iron bed made?
- Where did the raw materials originate?
- Where did the manufacturing take place?
- Who turned those materials into the finished bed?
How is the bed put together?
What guarantee comes with the bed?
