Importantly, these items aren’t about fashion. They make enough of a statement, just being. When it comes to beds, supreme comfort should be at the top of your tick list. Stick to an unfussy, timeless design and you really can’t go wrong. And, whilst there are currently some fabulous finishes to choose from, the real beauty of an iron, steel or brass bedstead is in the reassuring solidity of its construction.
Here’s something rather revealing: despite their otherwise contemporary taste, I regularly encounter customers whom still desire a ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ style bedstead. This is because they recognise that such bedsteads have an ageless elegance. Quite rightly, they know that it won’t matter if they completely change their bedroom scheme five or ten times over the next decade; the bed will remain a constant.
Of course, we do cater for the more adventurous of customers. A zingy mustard, cool mint or rich raspberry coloured paint finish is usually their preference. But guess what’s underneath it all? Yes, an otherwise classically styled, carefully crafted bedstead. Variations on metallic finishes – brushed steel, ‘raw’ metal, warm nickel and polished brass are also on trend. But once again, the shape of the bed doesn’t really differ that much.
Naturally, when it comes to beds, I’m biased. But these rules really do apply to all key items of furniture and furnishings – and particularly so within the bedroom. After all, you might enjoy cooking on a fabulous range or soaking in a big bath tub, but you still don’t spend a third of your life in the kitchen or bathroom. Well, hopefully not. So don’t be afraid to make your bedroom an expression of whom you truly are… And if that means the biggest, blowsiest, brassiest four poster that you can buy, then so be it. But one thing is for sure – get it right – and bedtime stories will never be better.
